Hema Sharma is a native of Chennai, India where she started dancing Bharatanatyam at the age of 8 under the tutelage of Kancheepuram Gnanaprakasam. She si also well-versed in other Indian dance forms such as Kuchipudi, Mohini Atam, Kathak and folk dances. She holds the titles of Natyaratna and Natyakalaratna. She has extensive training and experience working with renowned artistes, like Padmashri Adyar K. Lakshman and the Dhananjayans. She made her public debut in 1963 and has performed at several venues in India and the USA. She is now well-recognized as a teacher and has students from varying ethnic backgrounds. Hema Sharma has been the Ethnic Commissioner representing India on the Mayor's Ethnic Enrichment Commission since 1992 to 2018. She moved to Miami in 2018 and continue teach, perform, in Miami.
